ACQUISITION AND HARVESTING - 3D Data Acquisition
Shape capture: -Laser Scanner -Digital and High-resolution photogrammetry -Data set alignment and registration Reflectance capture: -Calibrated acquisition of color/material/texture -Calibrated acquisition of surface reflectance properties
ACQUISITION AND HARVESTING: Multimedia platforms
Web-based and semi-immersive interfaces based on GoogleEarth platform for 3D Data-Base visualization Integrated system that uses palmtop computers in semi-immersive VR and Internet technologies to enable archaeological analysis of artifacts, for providing archaeologists and tourist with Immersivity, Multimedia data support and Cooperation
DOCUMENTATION AND MANAGEMENT - Information Systems
Definition of a system of metadata that could qualify a 3D model: -catalogue metadata, which serves as a tool for finding data; -commentary metadata, for providing background information about the nature of the evidence used to create the model;
VISUALISATION - 3D Modelling
Standardized-3D models according to: -transposition quality from real-life object to digital; -integration in an information environment; -arrangement of technical standards for long time preservation and interoperability;
VISUALISATION - Digital reconstructions
Digital reconstruction from existing 3D data, or historical documents for real time visualization
VISUALISATION - Virtual and Augmented Reality
Virtual prototyping and 3D-Virtual GIS to be visualized in semi-immersive VR, using customized palmtop computer interfaces: -visualisation of archeological artifacts
VISUALISATION - Other
Visualisation of 3D models with a large amount of polygons on a web-based platform, palmtop and low-end PC desktop.
ACCESS TO DIGITAL RESOURCES - Virtual exhibitions
Virtual prototyping and 3D-Virtual GIS to be visualized in semi-immersive VR, using customized palmtop computer interfaces: -visualisation of archeological artifacts

Department/Generate Directorate/Bureau/Service Description
The Department of the University of Bologna is devoted to architecture, urban planning, restoration, survey and representation of architecture, in an urban and archeological environment. The research group has the skills necessary for the project to plan, design and develop prototypes of 3D models in an experimental standardized structure.

Project Duration
2000-2001
Objectives and priorities
The project concerns the creation of an integrated dimensional data system of shape and surface quality, rendered in a tridimensional space for the archeological analysis. It?s a data system shaped as a 3D network hypertextual data-base of eight tombs, accessible on the web.
Problems encountered and lessons learnt
Today there are no standards for the acquisition of 3D-data set. The acquisition of data from archeological sites is difficult to manage even if sites located in the neighborhood of urban centers. The lack of standards inhibits 3D acquisition methodologies to become spread, recognized and certified systems available to the whole reference scientific community.
