ACQUISITION AND HARVESTING - 2D Data Acquisition
LIA is specialised in the use of field station for acquisition data in archaeological contexts. LIA has also numerous competences in the field of processing 2D objects by GIS systems.
ACQUISITION AND HARVESTING - 3D Data Acquisition
The management of the graphic data with GIS technology makes it possible to develop 3D spatial data of buildings, monuments and territorial contexts within a single environment (3D scene function).
ACQUISITION AND HARVESTING: Multimedia platforms
LIA has competences in the use of commercial platforms as (i.e. ArcGIS by ESRI) but also develops proprietary interfaces (i.e. WEBGIS interface: see Websites).
DOCUMENTATION AND MANAGEMENT - Data management
LIA has numerous competences in the development of ICT applications for the storage and processing of archaeological data.
DOCUMENTATION AND MANAGEMENT - Information Systems
LIA has many Information System. The research is being developed along the following lines:1. GIS applications in the management of archaeological excavation data; 2. GIS applications in the analysis of settlement patterns.
DOCUMENTATION AND MANAGEMENT - Metadata Standardisation
The activities of the LIA include the design and development of archaeological databases (using ORACLE RDBMS) with which to carry out statistical processing and analysis of data.
DOCUMENTATION AND MANAGEMENT - Cultural Theasuri
LIA has numerous competences in the field of Cultural Thesauri for the management of excavation data and archaeological artefacts.
VISUALISATION - 2D Graphical user interfaces
Lia uses Arcgis 9.3 (ESRI) as Graphical User Interface for storages and manages 2D data (vector and raster).
VISUALISATION - 3D Modelling
LIA has competence in the field of 3D graphical modelling of archaeological artefacts (i.e. ceramic objects). Its starting point is the analytical study of ceramic fragments discovered during the archaeological excavation.
VISUALISATION - Digital reconstructions
Another field of research developed by the LIA concerns the virtual three-dimensional reconstruction of buildings, monuments, urban and territorial contexts.
ACCESS TO DIGITAL RESOURCES - Websites
LIA implemented two different WEBGIS applications for the management of archaeological data: excavations data (http://gis.lia.unile.it/wodos) and territorial data (http://gis.lia.unile.it/insediamenti).
OUTSTANDING RESEARCH AND SPECIFIC INTERESTS - Short and long-term preservation
WEBGIS applications and 3D reconstructions implemented by LIA became an important instrument for short and long-term preservation of artefacts, building, settlements, historical landscapes, etc.
OUTSTANDING RESEARCH AND SPECIFIC INTERESTS - Multilingualism
WEBGIS applications, implemented by LIA for the management of archaeological data, have a Multilingual User Interface (Italian and English).

Department/Generate Directorate/Bureau/Service Description
The Department of C. H. is divided in different research areas: history-epigraphy, archaeology and bioarchaeology, topography-urbanistic and numismatic. The field activities (in Italy and outside of Salento, i.e. Hierapolis in Turkey) are sustained by aid of a number of research laboratories (as LIA for Archaeology).

Project Duration
3 years
Objectives and priorities
The objective of the project is the GIS management of archaeological data relating to the surveys carried out in Hierapolis of Phrygia, in Turkey. The research will include, on one hand, the extensive use of these informations especially on the level of quantitative analyses and analyses of the distribution of the materials, and, on the other, the development of 3D stratigraphic model.
Other comments
The Research team will use the skills, methodologies and computer programmes perfected by the LIA of the Salento University. It will be developed through intensive and extensive surveys whose purposes are: 1. Acquisition of new data in order to check the typology and the chronology of the structures already excavated in the older excavations. 2. Acquisition of new archaelogical evidences through extensive excavations to understand the archaeological deposits? processes of formation. 3. Acquisition of new archaelogical evidences through intensive survey to understand the transformation of Hierapolis urban context in time.
